Players/Pitchers of the Week
Period of July 15-21
Jason Rogers, Huntsville
(.500/.571/1.500, 3 G, 6-for-12, 4 HR, 7 RBI, 5 R, 2 BB, 3 K)
Coming off a brutal June in which he hit just .126/.236/.147 in 27 games, Rogers has rebounded nicely in July for a .333/.422/.667 line through 12 contests. The 25-year-old first baseman packed a lot of wallop into his three games last week, going 4-for-6 with three homers and six RBI at Pensacola Saturday before adding a solo blast Sunday. Rogers had gone 144 at-bats since his previous homer on May 27 before Saturday’s outburst, which made him the third Huntsville player ever to hit three long balls in one game. Despite plating only seven runs in June, Rogers now ranks second in the Southern League with 60 RBI.
Period of July 8-14
David Goforth
(2-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 14 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 3 BB, 9 K)
The jump to Double-A is supposed to be the most difficult transition rising Minor Leaguers have to navigate, but Goforth is making it look easy. Following a rough debut June 25 and a so-so follow-up July 1, the 24-year-old Mississippi product tossed a seven-inning shutout at Tennessee on Monday before firing another seven scoreless frames against Birmingham on Saturday. Through four starts, Goforth is holding Southern League hitters to a .195 average.
Period of July 1-7
Andy Moye, Huntsville
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, GS, 8.1 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 2 K)
In the midst of a tough season for Moye, he produced a sparkling performance July 3 against Chattanooga to notch his fourth win of the season. The right-hander from Georgia endured a difficult stretch losing three in a row before snagging a victory against the Lookouts. Moye produced a similar feat early in the season May 20 versus Montgomery where he pitched eight scoreless innings and held the Biscuits to five hits and no walks.
